Fils d’un riche propriétaire de moulin, Constable convainc sa famille de le laisser se consacrer à la peinture et entre à la Royal Academy Schools en 1799. Ses premiers envois à l’Academy sont mal accueillis — il ne reçoit aucune voix lors d’une élection en 1814 — car le paysage occupe un rang bien inférieur à la peinture d’histoire dans l’estime académique. Il revient sans cesse au même tronçon de la vallée de la Stour autour d’East Bergholt, peignant en plein air des esquisses à l’huile grandeur nature pour capter la météo et la lumière avant d’achever de plus grandes toiles en atelier.
Il n’est finalement élu académicien à part entière qu’en 1829, alors qu’il a déjà la cinquantaine, mais vend peu de tableaux en Grande-Bretagne de son vivant — sa réputation décolle d’abord en France, où son œuvre influence Delacroix puis les peintres de Barbizon. Il meurt à Londres en 1837.
