Cézanne creció en Aix-en-Provence junto a su amigo de infancia Émile Zola, y expuso con el grupo impresionista en su primera y tercera muestra, antes de alejarse de los efectos fugaces del movimiento hacia algo más construido. Volvió obsesivamente a los mismos motivos — manzanas y paños sobre una mesa de estudio, jugadores de cartas y, sobre todo, la montaña de Sainte-Victoire, pintada decenas de veces desde las mismas colinas de Provenza.
Durante la mayor parte de su carrera se topó con la indiferencia o el sarcasmo, y trabajó en gran aislamiento en torno a Aix. El reconocimiento llegó tarde: una gran retrospectiva parisina, el año después de su muerte, en 1907, reveló su obra tardía a toda una generación de pintores más jóvenes, Picasso y Braque incluidos, que tomaron su tratamiento aplanado y facetado de la forma como punto de partida del cubismo. Murió en Aix-en-Provence en 1906.
