Fils d’un marchand de textile anversois, Van Dyck entre en apprentissage à dix ans et, à la fin de son adolescence, travaille déjà dans l’atelier de Pierre Paul Rubens, qui le qualifie lui-même de « meilleur élève ». Il est déjà maître indépendant en 1618, et un séjour d’étude en Italie affine le style de portrait élégant et fluide qu’il apportera plus tard en Angleterre.
En 1632, Charles Ier l’invite à Londres, le nomme peintre de cour principal et le fait chevalier, lui offrant un revenu conséquent et une maison au bord de la Tamise. Van Dyck y passe l’essentiel du reste de sa carrière, produisant les portraits grandioses et d’un naturel apparent de l’aristocratie anglaise que les portraitistes britanniques suivants passeront un siècle à imiter. Il meurt à Londres en 1641, à 42 ans, après être tombé gravement malade lors d’un voyage à Paris.
