Nacido en Sudbury, Suffolk, hijo de un comerciante de telas, Gainsborough fue aprendiz de un platero londinense a los 13 años y se formó con el ilustrador francés Hubert Gravelot. Trabajó en Ipswich antes de instalarse en la ciudad balneario de moda de Bath en 1759, donde los encargos de retratos de visitantes adinerados le dieron los medios para pintar paisajes para sí mismo.
En Bath estudió los retratos de Van Dyck conservados en las mansiones cercanas, asimilando una pincelada fluida y elegante que moldeó su propio estilo de retratista. En 1768 se convirtió en miembro fundador de la Royal Academy junto a su rival Joshua Reynolds, y se trasladó a Londres en 1774 como uno de los retratistas más de moda del país. Murió en Londres en 1788.
