Nacido en Leiden en una familia de molineros, Rembrandt se formó brevemente con Pieter Lastman en Ámsterdam antes de establecerse en esa ciudad en 1631. Su matrimonio en 1634 con Saskia van Uylenburgh, prima de un destacado marchante de arte, le abrió las puertas a clientes adinerados, y durante dos décadas dirigió un taller activo que producía retratos, escenas bíblicas y autorretratos marcados por una luz dramática y una pincelada cada vez más suelta y expresiva.
Un estilo de vida extravagante y una afición a coleccionar arte por encima de sus posibilidades acabaron por alcanzarlo: se declaró en quiebra en 1656, y su casa, sus cuadros y su colección fueron vendidos. Aun así, siguió trabajando, produciendo algunas de sus obras tardías más profundas — entre ellas La novia judía — en sus últimos años. Murió en Ámsterdam en 1669.
