Van Gogh took up painting only in his late twenties, after failed attempts at art dealing and the ministry, and produced his entire body of work — over 2,000 pieces — in roughly a decade. Moving to Arles in the south of France in 1888 pushed his color and brushwork to new intensity, but the same year, after a quarrel with Paul Gauguin who had come to live with him, he cut off part of his own left ear during a breakdown.
He spent much of his final two years moving between hospital and asylum care, painting with striking productivity in calmer stretches — The Starry Night dates from this period. He died in Auvers-sur-Oise in July 1890 from a gunshot wound, two days after being shot; whether it was self-inflicted, as long assumed, or accidental has been debated by biographers since a widely discussed 2011 reappraisal.
