Seurat trained at the École des Beaux-Arts before developing a technique built from tiny, separate dabs of pure color rather than mixed pigment, relying on the viewer’s eye to blend them from a distance — a scientific approach to color he called Divisionism and which critics nicknamed Pointillism.
His technique reached its fullest expression in A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884–86), the product of more than thirty preparatory oil sketches of a single park on an island in the Seine. Seurat died suddenly in Paris in 1891, probably of meningitis, cutting short a career that had already reshaped how younger painters — Van Gogh and Matisse among them — thought about color.
