Born to a well-off banking family and educated in the classics, Degas enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1855 before turning to the independent circle that became Impressionism. He exhibited in seven of the movement’s eight group shows, and his real subject throughout was the human figure in motion — dancers rehearsing, laundresses at work, women at their toilette — studied with the eye of a draftsman rather than a plein-air landscapist.
As his eyesight failed from the 1880s onward, he turned increasingly to pastel and sculpture, working the same ballet and bathing subjects into wax figures rediscovered only after his death. He never married, grew reclusive and reportedly difficult in his later years, and died in Paris in 1917.
