Born on the island of St. Thomas in the Danish West Indies, Pissarro arrived in Paris in 1855 and gradually built the circle of painters — Monet, Cézanne, Degas, Renoir among them — who would become the Impressionists. He helped organise their first group show in 1874 and, alone among them, exhibited at every one of the eight Impressionist exhibitions through 1886.
Generous and unusually open to new ideas for a painter of his generation, he experimented with Pointillism alongside Seurat in the 1880s before returning to a looser touch, and gave informal lessons to Cézanne early in both their careers. He died in Paris in 1903, remembered by his peers less for a single signature style than for the encouragement he gave nearly everyone around him.
